WWII Japanese Saipan Silk Rising Sun Flag

japanese_rising_sun_flag_1

The flag measures 25 inches by 36 inches and is made from silk.  It is in very delicate condition, as are most silk battle flags from this era.  There are a few separations in the silk.  The flag appears to have been a souvenir for a US GI because it is marked in red ink, “Sipan (sic) 1943, Sam Deluca, 37817864.”

I was able to locate Deluca’s enlistment record in the National Archives.

WWII Japanese Grouping – 1000 Stitch Belt, Flag, Photographs, Canteen, Etc

ww2_japanesegroup1

This is a sizable WWII Imperial Japanese souvenir group of captured items from the Philippines and Tinian Islands during 1944-45 including:

  • Silk 25″ x 35″ “Meatball” flag with original writings penned by different hands.  The flag has one spot with discoloration / deterioration, but it hardly detracts from presentation.
  • Cotton “1000 Stitch” belt decorated with a screened rising sun and flanking tigers.  Two Japanese coins have been affixed to the belt.  One of the drawstrings is tucked inside the belt.
  • Military issue Japanese canteen w/ etchings scribed on one side (name?).
  • Unused pack of Japanese cigarettes
  • Japanese sewing kit
  • Red covered book of unknown subject matter
  • Small metal canister used possibly for the anti-fogging rag to wipe gas mask lenses
  • Two captured Japanese documents
  • Sixty-nine original snapshots of Japanese Casualties, Japanese planes, US planes, camp life, grave markers, Japanese encampments/bunkers, and destruction.

WWII Imperial Japanese Army Helmet w/ 2nd Pattern Cover

SONY DSC

Excellent WWII Japanese combat helmet with 2nd pattern helmet cover.  Nice IJA (Imperial Japanese Army) helmet, with complete chinstraps.  Shows use as the cushion pads are missing and the date stamp under the front pad is illegible.  The second pattern cover is super clean and probably unissued.  The cover is dated 1943.  The ‘typical’ drawstring is missing to the cover and a series of strings is in its place (can be replaced if desired).  It has slight mothing to the yellow wool star, which is fairly typical on many helmet covers.   2nd pattern covers are actually harder to find than the 1st pattern.   A great pairing of an original helmet and cover.
